If at first you don’t succeed, try, try …
Oh how that appeared to be Cory Munson’s – Northside’s – destiny Friday night as the Eagles squared off against Lee County.

With just shy of four minutes left to play, and with the Trojans up 10-7, the Northside kicker was called upon to try a 59-yard fieldgoal to tie it. It was straight center but just short.
The Eagles’ defense, however – bending all night but refusing once again to break (the same could be said for Lee County’s – forced the host to punt it back. Northside gained just enough ground to put it right there on the same make: 59 yards. This time, however, he made it.
The Eagles’ still had to block a 42-yard try from David Beaver, but it appeared the stage was set.
It wasn’t.
Northside – despite a 25-yard fieldgoal by the aforementioned – lost it on a touchdown pass in the corner of the endzone. Final: 16-13, Lee County.
The game went as expected for two defenses that averaged about a touchdown a game. Beaver did give Lee County the early lead with a 32-yard fieldgoal early in the first quarter. After punts here and there – an Armand Childs interception in there, as well as a couple of fumbles recovered by the Trojans – the half horn sounded to find the three points had held up.
The Eagles finally got on board in the third on a drive that ended with Jadin Daniels’ one-yard run. Munson’s point after made it 7-3.
Quarterback Jase Orndorff gave the Trojans the lead back on a 15-yard run. Beaver made it 10-7. The fourth marked a continuation of the defensive battle, finally giving way to the dramatic finish.
Lee County kept its unbeaten string alive with the win. It is now 8-0 and 2-0 in Region 1-AAAAAA. Northside stands at 6-2, 1-1.
