One that got away.
That’s pretty much all Veterans could shake its head and say Wednesday as Mount de Sales’ players no doubt cheered the only error the Lady Warhawks made – the only one on either side, actually. It came with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and gave them a walk-off run and a 5-4 win.
The run also ruined Veterans’ rally in the top of the inning to tie it. The Lady Cavaliers scored one in the third. The Lady Warhawks plated a pair in the fifth to go up 2-1 but the host tied it in the bottom of the inning. It then went up 4-2 with two more in the sixth.
Trinity Thiel accounted for all of Veterans’ RBIs and two of its six hits – one of those a double.
Credit for limiting the Lady Warhawks’ offense went to Jordyn Partain. She worked seven innings. She also struck out 12 and walked three.
Madison Bussell gave up one of Mount de Sales’ nine hits and one run in three innings of work. She also walked four. Emily Myers yielded six hits and three runs in three innings of work – also striking out one – and Jenna West gave up two hits and a run in two-thirds of an inning.
Elsewhere, Howard also put an ace on the mound and shut out Northside 4-0. That was Elle Doolittle who limited the Lady Eagles to just three hits.
Kylee Ussery and Celena Luna weren’t far off. The first worked five and a third innings and only gave up five hits. But, she also walked six. Luna worked two-thirds of an inning, didn’t give up a hit or run, but also walked three.
At Houston County, the Lady Bears won 7-5 but had to hold off some late West Laurens antics. Houston County scored two in the first and five in the second for all of its runs. The Lady Raiders clawed back into it with three in the fourth and two in the seventh – with another runner in scoring position and one out.
Madi Campbell went 1-3 and accounted for two of the Lady Bears’ runs driven in. Also, Lauren Ross was 2-3 with an RBI.
Rylee Lamb worked all seven innings and limited West Laurens to just four hits. She struck out six and walked two.
