“Iron sharpens iron” as the Bible says.
Such might have been a good analogy when Veterans and Perry met Monday on the softball field. The Lady Warhawks won 13-5, but it was not as lopsided as that might sound. For starters, it was only 6-5, Veterans, until the fifth. That’s when it scored three, followed by one and then three to pull away.
Still, there were 26 hits between the two.
The Lady Warhawks had 16, the Lady Panthers 10. Both also left a slew on base. Veterans left 11 on – it had at least one runner on in every inning. Perry stranded eight – one on in every inning except the fourth.
If you had to pick out one thing that really hurt the Lady Panthers, it was walks. They had eight in all. Six of those were charged to Reagan Hughes. In four and two-thirds innings, she also gave up 12 of the hits and nine runs – four in the first, two in the third and three in the fifth. Allison Peavy also walked one in an inning and a third and Carsen Garner gave up a free pass in one inning of work. Peavy yielded two hits and a run while striking out one. Garner gave up two hits and three runs.

The Lady Warhawks on the other hand, didn’t walk a batter. That was between Jenna West and Madison Bussell. The first worked three innings. She gave up seven hits and the five runs while striking out one. Bussell worked the final four and gave up three hits while fanning a pair.
Offensively, 10 Veterans batters had at least one hit. That number was seven for Perry.
For the Lady Warhawks, Jenna Thomas went 3-5 with a pair of RBIs and scored a run. Kaylee Brown went 3-4 with a run scored. Catherine Hickey went 2-3 with two walks, two RBIs and two scored. Emily Myers Jalah Gainous and Chloe Barnes each drove in two. The first was 1-3 – a double – with a pair of walks and three runs scored. The second was 1-5 and the third 1-1 – a double.
For the Lady Panthers, who fell to 2-2 – Veterans improved to 2-0 – Peavy was 2-4 and Avery Williams 2-3. Abby Ussery was 1-4 but it was a homerun.
