HoCo, Veterans strong at Locust Grove tourney

Both Houston County and Veterans made a strong showing at the Gibbs Garage Southside Classic held this weekend at Locust Grove High School. Both advanced to the Gold Bracket at the tournament. The Lady Bears and Lady Warhawks were unable to dust off the cobwebs during the pool play matches but were able to regroup and finished 2-1. Houston County was the second seed from Pool B. Veterans was the second seed from Pool C.

The Lady Bears started pool play with wins against Dutchtown and Woodland. However, it lost to ELCA in pool play, which was strong enough to give them the No. 2 seed in Pool B. The girls went on to play Union Grove in the consolation game.

Houston County will be next be on the road at Ola High School Aug. 14.

Veterans completed pool play with two wins against Jonesboro and Luella and lost to Union Grove. The Lady Warhawks went 1-1 in Gold Bracket play losing to Whitewater and winning the consolation match against Sandy Springs. The team’s tournament leaders in kills were Alasha Heard with 44 and Katie Reiff with 13. Heard added four blocks. Sydney Hudson and Meredith Buchanan led the team on the serving line with nine and eight aces respectfully. Abby Cross accumulated 19 digs throughout the tournament and Sophia Lopez added 32 assists.

The Lady Warhawks will have a home match Aug. 14 against Mount de Sales and Peach County.
