Turn of events turns events against VHS

It’s a game of inches.

Or so they say – an expression/truth Veterans, coming up short to Northgate 21-3 Friday at home, would certainly not argue against.

Case in point. The Warhawks, trailing 7-3 in the third quarter, put together a nice drive. So nice in fact that they get the ball to within inches of the goal line. Cyrus Zuell has done such a nice job getting it to that point – with runs and catching passes; running over one defender, even leaping over another for example – why not give him one more shot; and on fourth down to boot?

Veterans’ coaches do. He comes up short. Not only that, but he gets hurt on the play. Not only that, but on the first play from scrimmage, the Northgate runner takes it all the way back for a score.

The point after makes it 14-3. The Vikings add another score late, but that turns out to be another proverb: the straw that broke the camel’s back.

As far as how the game progressed, Veterans was able to grab an early lead when a bad snap gave them the ball on visitor’s side of the field. That eventually led to James Tinney’s 32-yard field goal.

The Vikings nearly turned a Warhawks turnover into points, but their 28-yard field goal attempt failed.

From there the two pretty much went back and forth – neither offense able to generate much – until Northgate put together a drive that got it about 10 yards shy of the redzone. There, it went for it on a fourth-and-inches and instead of making the first down, got a 28-yard touchdown run. The point after made it 7-3 and set the stage for previous events already mentioned.
