Olivia Brown and Rylee Lamb took care of the defense. A handful accounted for the offense. Combined, they helped lead Houston County to a 10-0 shutout win of Veterans Thursday at the home of the Lady Warhawks.
Brown and Lamb held Veterans, which fell to 6-5, to just three hits. Brown worked four innings, gave up two hits and struck out two – she didn’t walk a batter. Lamb worked an inning and two-thirds. She gave up the third hit while striking out one and also not walking a batter.
The Lady Bears on the other hand, strung together 14 hits. Those were charged against Jenna West and Madison Bussell. The first worked four and a third, the second an inning and two-thirds. West gave up nine hits, seven runs, struck out one and walked one. Bussell gave up the other hits. She also struck out one and walked one.
Alice Thomas had three in four trips to the plate to help lead Houston County, which improved to 9-5. She also scored twice. Jamie Benda, Madi Campbell, Lauren Ross, Makayla Krepps and Averi Martin each had two.
Benda was 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Campbell was 2-4 with two driven in and three runs scored. Ross was 2-4 with four RBIs. Krepps was 2-3 with a walk, two RBIs and a run scored and Martin was 2-4.
Kaylee Brown, Catherine Hickey and Jalah Gainous were each 1-2 to account for Veterans’ hits.
The Lady Bears scored one in the first and four in the second to quickly get out front. After a pair of scoreless innings, it added to the lead with two in the fifth and three in the sixth, the final inning.
Elsewhere, Northside got off to a great start against Coffee in a Region 1-AAAAAA matchup at home, but it couldn’t sustain it.
The Lady Eagles scored three in the bottom of the first to go up 3-1. The Lady Trojans matched the trey in the top of the second, but Northside tied it at four in the bottom half of the inning. Coffee pulled away from there. It scored two in the third, one in the fourth, four in the fifth and one in the seventh.
It just edged the Lady Eagles in hits, 10-8. Stephanie Ruffin had three of those in three trips to the plate. She also walked once, drove in one and scored once.
Also, Kylee Ussery was 2-4.
Coffee improved to 2-1 in the division, 12-2 overall. Northside fell to 0-2, 7-6.
Also, Perry evened up its Region 2-AAAA record – 1-1 – with a 11-5 win on the road at Spalding. The Lady Panthers improved to 6-5 overall, while the Lady Jaguars fell to 1-1, 6-3.
Perry, with a run in the first, two in the third, two in the fourth and three in the fifth, got out to a 10- lead. Spalding tried to make a game of it with a run in the bottom half of that inning and two each in the sixth and seventh.
They found the Lady Panthers unwilling to concede, as they answered those with a run in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Both had 11 hits.
Terra Odom and AliRae Dykes each went 2-4 at the top of the lineup to help lead the squad. Odom also scored three runs while Dykes drove in two and scored twice.
Miranda Lawhorn also had two RBIs and a run scored while going 2-4.
Allison Peavy earned the win with six innings of work. She gave up the hits, struck out three and walked one. Reagan Hughes worked an inning, struck out three and walked one.
