Veterans turns back Baldwin to go 3-0

Veterans continues to make history. The latest came Friday night on the road at Baldwin County.

The 38-30 win over the Braves marked the first time in school history the team has started 3-0.

It did take a bit of a rally in the end.

In fact, the Warhawks led 17-0 after one. The first score came after a bad snap had given them the ball on the opponent’s 15. On the first play from scrimmage, Julian Barnes ran it in for the score. The point after made it 7-0.

After a 28-yard field goal by Daniel Gibbs made it 10-0, Veterans recovered a fumble and turned it into a Cyrus Zuell touchdown run of six yards.

The Braves used a 34-yard “pick six” – one of two, actually – to get back into the ballgame. Following that, both took turns punting twice. Baldwin then cut it to 17-14 following an interception in the endzone and a 32-yard pass play. That came just seconds before the half.

Zuell’s one-yard run to cap a long dry to open the third and James Tinney’s point after made it 24-14. The aforementioned second interception run back – it for 41 yards – coupled with the point after then made it 24-21.

The Braves then recorded a safety on a blocked punt and turned the ensuing kickoff into a 70-yard score to go up 30-24.

That’s how it stood at the end of three.

The Warhawks put together a scoring drive to start the fourth and take the lead back. Barnes finished it off with a four-yard run. The PAT made it 31-30.

Zuell’s touchdown run of 29 yards late made it the 38-30. That came with just over two minutes left to play.

Baldwin still had an opportunity but to Veterans sack helped remove that option and secure the win.
