Thomas County Central pulls away from Veterans

Another day, another heartbreaker for what is the Veterans Warhawks’ season.

This time it was coming up on the short end of a 34-14 loss to Upson-Lee.

The Yellow Jackets entered the game having only scored three touchdowns all year. They nearly matched that by scoring on their first two possessions.

Veterans did answer after the first – a drive of 70 yards that ended with Sebastian Verger running it in from the 4 – to make it 7-all.

The Warhawks also responded in kind to the host’s second score. By then the game was into the second quarter. They tied it on quarterback Leyton Pinckney’s 60-yard pass to Cordelle Clark coupled with James Tinney’s point after.

That’s where it stood at the half.

The game became a defensive one throughout the third. The Yellow Jackets got back out front with about eight minutes left to play on a 69-yard touchdown run.

Veterans drove following but came up short in TCC territory on a fourth-and-one. The Yellow Jackets scored again following to make it 28-14.

The Warhawks went three-and-out following. Momentum on its side, TCC added another score to put the game away.

It was the Yellow Jackets’ first win in Region 1-AAAAA. It improved to 1-1, 3-5 overall. Veterans fell to 0-2, 2-6.
