Defense helps lead Northside past Macon County

In the limelight is Cory Munson. The junior kicker hit on field goals of 22, 45 and 35 Friday against Macon County in McConnell-Talbert stadium.

Behind the scenes – but quickly making a name for itself – is Northside’s defense. It held Macon County to minus 12 yards rushing in the first half and 79 yards total during that span. It finished by limiting the visitor to just 128 overall.

Combined, they helped the Eagles put together a 23-0 shutout of the Bulldogs.

Munson hit his first field goal in the first quarter to make it 3-0. That’s where it was as the second quarter began.

The Eagles also had two interceptions during that span and a third one in the second quarter. That last led to Willie Northern’s 17-yard touchdown. He finished the night with 93 yards rushing while Northside as a whole had 222.

The other 70 came via Eric Smith. His came in the fourth – after Munson had chipped in a field goal in the third and during that quarter.

For the Eagles, it was their fifth-straight win. They improved to 5-1. The defending Class A champion suffered just its second loss and is 3-2.
