Coach’s corner: Bears, Warhawks clash; Panthers take on Peach

Houston County Head Coach Ryan Crawford, on Veterans

“I think as always, and every week, the game of football is won at the line of scrimmage. We’ve got to do a good job of stopping the run, and doing that kind of stuff, and make them where they’re one dimensional. That’s how you help your defense out.

“But (Jeremy) Horton’s a great player. He’s a game-changer. We have several guys in our county who are like that. And in the Middle-Georgia area, and he’s one of them. He can line up any place. Slot. Wide. Running back. Quarterback. And throw it to him, find a way to get it to him.

“And they do a great job of finding ways to get him the ball. And then one thing about Coach (David) Bruce’s teams, is they’re well-coached. I mean it is what it is as far as talent. I mean you get what you get as far as high school goes, but he does a great job of taking what he’s got and putting those kids in a position where they believe they can win.”

Kickoff – 7:30 p.m., at Freedom Field

Veterans Head Coach David Bruce, on Houston County

“They’ve got a running back, Wesley Steiner, he’s a heck of a good running back. He runs hard and you don’t arm tackle him. You better wrap up on him, because he’s going to run the football hard.

“And that offensive line … I’ve got the film, and from Game 1 to Game 3 is a tremendous amount of improvement.

“They’ve got some kids that can play. Defensively, I think they do a good job. I mean they’ve been ‘big-played’ some, but the people that have big-played them are some pretty big-time players. So, they’re definitely not what you would call an 0-3 team. They’re definitely not.”

Perry Head Coach Kevin Smith, on Peach County

“It sort of worked out for us with our open week as we’re going against Rutland and they’re a Wing-T team.

“Then you have to transition out of Wing-T mode and get in a Spread/Stretch game against Peach County, so it was good to be able to get back last week to fundamentals. Working on Perry. Trying to get Perry better.

“And it gave us a couple of extra days to get ready for Peach County, which has an extremely good football team.

“Peach County, that’s one thing they are. They’re solid in all three phases of the game. They’ve got some real explosive players. Kearis (Jackson), you know, he returns punts and kickoffs for them. And he does there punting. So he makes their special teams good in a hurry.”

Kickoff – 8 p.m., at Peach County
