Warner Robins edges Peach County in thriller

*******RELIVE THE DEMONS WIN BY GOING TO THE HOUSTON HEALTHCARE REPLAYS TAB*******

Eli Mashburn’s 35-yard fieldgoal as the clock ran out proved to be the difference – at least on the scoreboard – in Warner Robins’ 38-35 win over Peach County Friday in Fort Valley.

It was a game few who witnessed it will forget.

The Demons began the defining drive on their own 20 and with 2:40 left on the clock. Quarterback Dylan Fromm hit Julius Cobbs for 12 yards to get things going and the chains moving. Two plays later, Fromm found Marcayll Jones for nine yards and another first down. Two more passes picked up six yards and a yard, respectively. The Trojans were then penalized five yards for too many on the field on the subsequent third-and-three.

Dylan then found Tyler Fromm on a pass that put the ball on the 25. Jaeven West added six more to take it to the 18. The clock displayed 35 seconds at that point. Two passes fell incomplete at that point, so with 22 seconds left, Mashburn stepped in and did his magic.

Peach County got the scoring started on its first possession of the game. It took the ball on the 30 and drove to the 7 where Trevon Woolfolk took it in from there. Mitchell Fineran made the point after to make it 7-0. That was with 7:37 left in the quarter.

Warner Robins went three-and-out on its first possession.

The Trojans then came back with another Fineran fieldgoal, this one from 37 yards out.

The Demons got on the board following on Jarius Burnette’s one-yard touchdown run. That capped off a drive that began on their own 20. Mashburn made it 10-7 with 11:08 left in the second.

Georgia-commit Kearis Jackson helped set up Peach County’s next score when he fielded the kickoff and ran it 64 yards to Warner Robins’ 35. On the very next play, quarterback Antonio Gilbert connected with Christ Gilbert on a flip pass, with the latter taking it from there to paydirt. Fineran’s point after made it 17-7.

Shortly after that, Fromm hit Cobbs for a 57-yard touchdown. Mashburn’s PAT made it 17-14.

Both defenses pretty much took over for the rest of the half, although Fineran was able to make it 20-14 with 32 seconds left.

The Demons took the opening kickoff of the second half on their own 40. West then made it 21-20 – with Mashburn’s PAT added in – when he ran it 56 yards for the score.

Then, with just over three minutes left in the quarter, Fromm hit Cobbs on a 32-yard touchdown pass. Mashburn made it 28-20.

At that point, Warner Robins had the momentum and appeared to have Peach County on its heels.

Jackson helped negate that. His 27-yard punt return put the ball on the 48 where Gilbert later found Chris Gibson for 18 yards and the score. He also found Jackson to convert the 2-point try and tie the game at 28 with 9:13 left to play.

The Demons again took the lead following when Fromm found Jones on a 34-yard strike. The PAT made it 35-28. The clock showed 5:48.

The Trojans were still not through.

They took the ball on the 30. They overcame a fumble to start. Then it was a fourth-and-four. Finally Gilbert found Jackson for 49 yards – to the 5 – to make the impossible seem possible. A run by Woolfolk netted nothing. On a third and goal, Gilbert made it to the 1. Peach County called a timeout and then lined Gibson – moving from his running back position – up at quarterback. The Demons initially had him stopped – the pile – but he spun off and wrapped around to score. The point after tied it at 35 and set up the thrilling finish.
