Baseball doubleheaders could define season for some

Pick your poison.

That is: choose your doubleheader. Will it be Harris County at Veterans? How about Lee County at Northside? Prefer the Bears? Then check out Valdosta at Houston County. Or, if the Panthers are your team of passion, they’ll be in action against Mary Persons.

That’s the slate for Friday (March 31). All could have a major impact on how their individual regions pan out in the end.

For starters, the Bulldogs versus the Warhawks – game times, 5 and 7 p.m. Veterans is 5-1 in 1-AAAAA. Harris County is 5-3. The two have met before. That was on March 7 in Hamilton. The Warhawks won 5-4 but had to do it with a run in the seventh.

If one or the other can sweep this – even a split helps the cause – it will line them – one or both – up well in a rematch against Thomas County Central.

The Yellow Jackets are 6-0. They beat Harris County 4-0 back on March 10. Their next matchup is April 14, another doubleheader.

TCC edged out Veterans 2-1 on March 3. Of note, however, is it took nine innings to do it. It should also be noted that the game was played at Veterans and the upcoming doubleheader will be played in Thomasville, but in the plus column, the Warhawks are 8-1 on the road.

Then you have the Eagles versus the Trojans.

Northside is 1-3 in 1-AAAAAA (two of those to Valdosta this past weekend). Lee County, oddly enough, is only 1-0, and as fate would have it, that win came against Northside – 8-3 – back on March 17.

The Eagles, as those who have watched them would attest, are a much better team than their record. If they can get a sweep over the Trojans, and with seven region games left to play following that, have the opportunity to map out their own destiny. The first pitch for that DH is slated for 4:30 p.m. It will also be broadcast. The first game will begin and continue on SportsMic.com and the SportsMic app and will also be picked up “in progress” on Fox 1670 at 6 p.m.

Northside will in some way, shape or fashion, also benefit from the Wildcats-Bears matchup. Those two enter their contest – the first pitch set for 4:30 p.m. and the games also to be broadcast on SportsMic.com and the SportsMic app – 3-1 in the division.

They, too, have met once. Valdosta won 8-6. Four errors didn’t help – especially on the road; only four of the Wildcats’ runs were earned. (The Bears also had the tying runs on second and third with an out before Valdosta brought in pitching relief.)

Finally, there will be the fireworks of the Bulldogs (5-2 in 2-AAAA) and Panthers (3-4). No doubt the first is longing to get back out on the field with the latter, after the latter saddled them with only their second region loss of the year this past Friday (4-3, Perry).

The first pitch for that matchup is slated for 4:30 p.m.

So go ahead. Choose which will be your bane. With much at stake, the action is bound to be killer.
