It’s been four years since Veterans and Northside met on the softball diamond – according to MaxPreps.com. The Lady Eagles won that one 2-0.
Tuesday it appeared they were going to win again. Both scored one in the first. Northside scored two in the second. Veterans scored two in the top of the fourth, but the Lady Eagles scored one more in the bottom half of the inning. That put them up 4-3.
Just three innings to go.
The fifth was scoreless by both. The sixth was the same. That’s when it came unraveled for the host. Veterans scored six unanswered runs and went on to win 9-4.
Both had 12 hits. Casey Ruffin helped lead Northside’s effort with a 3-3 day. She also drove in one. Madelny Lee went 2-4. She drove in a run and scored twice. Stephanie Ruffin was also 2-4. She scored once. Amya Smith was only 1-4 but she earned two RBIs in the effort while also scoring a run.
Chole Barnes and Raegan Stella each had three hits to lead Veterans. The first was 3-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. The second was 3-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Trinity Thiel was also 2-3 and drove in two while scoring once. Kaylee Brown was 1-4 and also drove in two.
Kylee Ussery went seven innings for the Lady Eagles. She gave up 10 hits, five runs, while walking three and striking out two. Celena Luna also worked part of the last inning. She gave up the other two hits and four runs.
Madison Bussell worked six innings for Veterans. She gave up the hits and runs while striking out four and refusing to give up a free pass. Also, Emily Myers worked a perfect inning in relief.
The Lady Warhawks improved to 6-3 with the effort, while Northside fell to 7-5.
