HoCo drops Evans to advance

There were “moments of it,” but a full and complete demonstration is still yet to come.

That is “potential”, as defined by Head Coach Maria Huelsman following the Lady Bears’ 3-0 win over Evans in the first round of the GHSA Class AAAAAA state volleyball tournament.

“I am pretty excited about this team,” she said. “I feel like we played well. Our offense was not quite clicking on all cylinders, but I’m not worried about it. With each round of the playoffs we will be tested at a higher level, and that is a challenge this team is ready to face.

“They have set their goals early in the season and now they are living them out.”

Perhaps that full potential will be on full display Tuesday when Houston County hosts Effingham County in the Sweet 16. The Lady Rebels are the No. 2 team out of Area 2. They beat Lovejoy 3-0 to improve to 24-6.

“(They) will be a hurdle to get over as HoCo volleyball has never made it past the round of 16,” said Huelsman. However, “Going to the Elite 8 will be goal number two met for them.

“This is a very special group of girls. I could not be more proud of a team as I am of them. I love this little team with a huge heart!”
