HoCo brings a little lightning of its own in Spalding win

It took a little longer than expected – thanks to a lightning delay of about an hour – but Houston County notched its second win of the season Friday – back-to-back at that – as it beat Spalding 27-7.

The Bears scored on their opening drive to set the tone. The Jaguars, who fell to 1-3, answered that for their lone score. Both PATs made it 7-all about midway through the quarter.

Houston County punted as the first came to a close. Spalding did likewise on its next possession, giving way to the Bears’ next – go-ahead – score. That came via a one-yard run by sophomore quarterback Max Rigby. He finished with 28 yards rushing, as well as 110 passing. The PAT was missed making it 13-7.

Houston County added another touchdown before the half on Wesley Steiner’s 47-yard run and then its final score in the fourth quarter on one by Donavon Mabry of 21 yards.

Steiner finished with 120 yards on 15 attempts while Mabry carried it 16 times for 76 yards. The Bears had 333 in total offense. Spalding had 211.
