Veterans beats Jones County – heads into state region champs, No. 1 seed

Except maybe to stay consistent, keep momentum going toward the playoffs or some other intangibles, Veterans had nothing riding on its non-region matchup at home against Jones County Friday.

It had long since wrapped up the Region 1-AAAAA title – that coming via its 11-1 record against division opponents. (Others making it into the postseason were Harris County as the No. 2 seed, Thomas County Central as the No. 3 and Bainbridge the No. 4. Warner Robins, which fell to Rutland 21-5 Friday, was left on the outside looking in, and finished its year 2-26.)

Back to the Warhawks, a win is a win – especially when it’s three straight now. Veterans won 6-1. It was actually closer than it looked, as the host only scored a run in the second and one in the fourth, thus only leading 2-0. Jones County even cut that in half in the top of the sixth, but the Warhawks put it away with four in the bottom half of the inning.

Jones County actually out-hit Veterans 6-5, but also didn’t help their cause with three errors.

Clifford Pless had one of the home team’s hits – in one at bat – and used it to drive in two. Cole Hooks went 1-2 with a walk and drove in one and Tyler Mayfield went 1-2 and drove in one.

Four got to see some time on the mound. Ben Gibbs started and worked two innings. He gave up two hits and struck out one. Daniel Hawthorne also pitched two innings. He also surrendered two hits but struck out four – walking one.

Hooks worked a hitless inning – striking out one and walking one – and Derek Wylie worked two. He gave up two hits, the run, while striking out five and walking four.
