Howard wins battle of the bats over Perry; HoCo beats NHS; VHS falls

Ordinarily, 13 hits gets you a win.

In fact, about the only thing that could foul it up would be a very stubborn opposition, and such was the case for Perry in its home game against Howard. It put up 17 and beat the Lady Panthers 17-8 (avenging a 5-4 loss in eight innings back on Sept. 7).

It was actually the Lady Huskies’ first Region 2-AAAA. They are 1-8, 6-17 overall, while Perry is 4-5, 10-11.

Howard’s biggest push came in the early innings. It scored one in the first, five in the second and six in the third. The Lady Panthers managed one in the first, but began to claw their way back in with four in the third and two in the fourth. That made it 12-7. The Lady Huskies then added insurance in the sixth and seventh, two and three runs, respectively.

Avery Williams, Lauren Heath and Emma Pruitt provided seven of the eight RBIs. Williams was 2-4 with three driven in. Heath was 3-3 with two driven in and Pruitt was 1-4 with two as well.

Perry used four pitchers – Ashley Gidney, Pruitt, Charisma Winkler and Allison Peavy – in the effort.

Elsewhere, Houston County had little trouble in beating Northside at home. The Lady Bears won 9-1 in five innings. They scored one in the second, five in the third and three in the fourth while the Lady Eagles’ lone run came in the second.

Madi Campbell helped pace the offense. She was 1-3, but the one was a triple good enough for three RBIs. Taylor Peebles also only had one hit – both also had a walk – but it was good enough for two RBIs.

Rylee Lamb went the distance, giving up four hits, striking out five and walking one.

The win gave Houston County the sweep of Northside and with it being a Region 1-AAAAAA matchup, improved the Lady Bears to 5-3 in the division, 14-7 overall. The Lady Eagles fell to 2-5, 10-12.

At Veterans, the Lady Warhawks rally came up short to Tattnall, 8-7. The Lady Trojans – 3-0 winner over Veterans earlier in the season – started the game with three runs in the first. That’s how it stayed until the bottom of the fifth when Veterans got two across.

That was somewhat of a wakeup call for the visitor as it scored two in the top of the six.

The Lady Warhawks answered with one but Tattnall added three more in the top of the seventh. Veterans scored four in the bottom half of the inning. It also had the tying runner on second but couldn’t get her in.

Tattnall out-hit Veterans 11-9. Trinity Thiel, Anna Dumas, Sarah Wilkerson and T.J. Thiel each finished with a pair of hits to lead the Lady Warhawk effort.

Jenna West worked six innings and took the loss. She gave up seven hits, five runs, struck out one and walked one. Madison Bussell worked the seventh. She gave up a pair of hits and three hits while striking out one and walking one.

The loss put Veterans at 9-9 while Tattnall improved to 19-4.
